Celebrating Filipino History Month, Part 2
“Portals” is a collaborative art installation between Ged Unson Merino and Aze Ong Liwanag. The project tests the resilience of fragile materials like textiles and crocheted yarn to the harshest of elements in tropical Philippines like torrential rains, strong winds, and scorching heat of the sun. The final form of the performative artwork at the end of the exhibition remains unpredictable as it is subject to fortuitous event.
The artists have also chosen to mediate the intervention by others on the artwork by sending out a call for crochets by artists and craftspeople that will be placed by Ong Ramirez herself on the artwork on behalf of those who respond to the call.. One can only surmise on the reason for this mediated intervention, such as
preservation of the design, but this attempt at control may prove futile for reasons already stated above.
At least for these two reasons “Portals” is a significant textile art project regardless of how the viewer appreciates the aesthetic of the work. This experimental endeavor deserves a prominent space in the narrative on Philippine contemporary textile/thread art.
Portals may be viewed at the Areté gardens, Ateneo de Manila University.
